About My Garden

This might be a blog about my garden but you wont find many gardening tips here. My garden is my way of trying to stay in contact with my Italian heritage. As my parent’s generation of Italian migrants are disappear and Italians are no longer new migrants, there is little evidence left of my Italian background. I feel that I have become fully assimilated into Australian and while this has lots of advantages I also feel a sense of disorientation and sometimes even panic at the loss of my Italianness. I grew up in a house with a large Italian vegetable garden in the 70s. In 2007 I was ill for a while and in bed a little more than usual. While sick in bed I kept daydreaming of trying to reproduce my dad’s Italian vegetable garden. I tried to remember all the plants he grew–the ones that were a constant as well as the ones he experimented with. My dad was a pretty anxious person but when he was in his garden he went into a zone and forgot his worries. Now that I live in house with a backyard I have a chance to have my own garden and get into the zone.

    Teresa,
your photos are amazing, as are your little observations about life in the garden. I would NEVER feel comfortable photographing the food I cook.
Well done and great to hear the Deleuze conference was great.
I look forward to chatting about it.
